State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said the capacity of Mongla seaport has increased as the present government took realistic and effective initiatives.
“The capacity of Mongla port has increased for taking effective initiatives by the government…And our neighbouring countries are now enjoying the facilities of the seaport,” he told reporters after attending a meeting at Mongla port conference room here, a press release said on Wednesday.
Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, former lawmaker Dr Md Mozammel Haque, Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Lokman Hossain, Additional Secretary of Shipping Ministry MM Tariqul Islam and Mongla Port Authority chairman Rear Admiral M Mozammel Haque, among others, were present at the meeting. Khalid said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina started the development works at Mongla Port in 1996. “Now the cargo handling, container handling and car handling capacities of the port are increasing day by day,” he added. The meeting discussed the development and modernisation of Mongla port, increasing facilities of the port users, ensuring navigability of Mongla channel and construction of Khanjahan Ali Airport.
