Canada eyes ‘greater’ trade relations with BD

Victor Fedeli, the Minister for Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade of Ontario, Canada has stressed on cooperation on the environment friendly nuclear energy reactors, economic immigration, renewable energy, green tech., education and Hi-tech IT based cooperation.

He looked at the ‘greater trade relations’ with Dhaka when Bangladesh Consul General Nayem Uddin Ahmed called on him at his office at the Ontario Trade Ministry on Thursday. 

He also mentioned that Ontario currently requires another 250,000 skilled jobs, where Bangladesh can be a great source of skilled manpower, the Bangladesh mission said. The minister congratulated the people of Bangladesh on the Birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and wished all the best in its endeavour to celebrating the ‘Mujib Year’.

The Consul General told the Minister that 2020 and 2021 are the two landmark years for Bangladesh, as it celebrates the great Birth centenary of the Father of the Nation followed by the 50th anniversary of the Independent Bangladesh.

He said that Bangladesh is emerging as one of the fastest growing economies in the world under the dynamic leadership of the daughter of the Father of the Nation Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He also mentioned that the Prime Minister places great importance on the relationship with Canada and is keen to develop new avenues of trade and investment relations with Canada. The Consul General expressed his strong interest to work with the Ontario Government for bringing skilled and semi-skilled labour from Bangladesh.

He particularly emphasised on the cooperation in ICT, pharmaceuticals, waste and water management, renewable energy, veterinary medicine, tertiary medical equipment and health services as priority areas. He requested the Minister to send a Trade Mission to Bangladesh to witness the huge economic development taking place in Bangladesh under the present government and determine prospective areas of trade and investment.

The Ontario Trade Minister conveyed that his government is actively considering sending a Trade Mission to Bangladesh soon. Earlier in the day, the Consul General also met Parliamentary Assistant to the Premier of Ontario Norm Miller and discussed on various issues of mutual interests.
