Call to enhance tax collection to uplift livelihood of people

Speakers at a discussion here today said there is no alternative to enhance tax collection for improving living and livelihood condition of the countrymen, reports BSS.

They also said emphasis should be given on creating more mass-awareness for boosting tax collection in the greater interest of making the country economically self-reliance.

Income Tax Zone of Rajshahi organised the discussion to mark the National Income Tax Day-2019 on its office premises. On the occasion, a colourful rally was also brought out in the divisional town. Income Tax Commissioner Dr Khandaker Ferdous Alam, Tax Appellate Commissioner Md Masud and Joint Commissioner Ashique Rana, among others, addressed the pre-rally meeting.

Dr Ferdous Alam viewed that the enhanced tax collection from the internal resources could be an effective means of reducing dependence on foreign aid for executing the uplift programmes.

He said income tax worth Taka 18.06 was collected in the week-long fair that concluded here on November 20 last.

Thousands of taxpayers thronged to submit returns in the fair as it has created enthusiasm among the public about the tax payment and return submission. A total of 34,1154 returns were submitted and 1,05,291 taxpayers received their income tax related services in the fair while 2,904 taxpayers received TIN certificates here.

Dr Alam said the department of Rajshahi zone realized income taxes worth around Taka 741 crore in last 2018-19 fiscal year up by Taka 67.51 crore than the previous fiscal.

Number of taxpayers has been stood to 2,29,726 in last financial year up by 15,589 than the previous fiscal in the zone consisting with the districts of Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Natore and Pabna.
