Officials and experts at a discussion on Sunday called for using every inch of cultivable land to enhance crop output and ensure food security amid the global crises caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine War.
They especially stressed on adapting the adverse impacts of climate change, innovating stress-tolerant crop varieties and adopting latest agro-technologies to keep agricultural production increasing for attaining sustainable food security.
They made the call at the discussion held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in observance of the World Food Day- 2022 with the theme 'Leave no one behind. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life' in the city.
The district administration, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and Department of Food with the help of Rangpur unit of Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh (CAB) chalked out the programmes marking the day.
With Deputy Director of the DAE Dr Obaidur Rahman Mondal in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Asif Ahsan attended the discussion as chief guest. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC General) Golam Rabbani, Additional Superintendent of Police (Admin and Finance) Madhusudan Roy, Additional Deputy Director (Horticulture) of the DAE Shamimur Rahman and President of the CAB local unit Abdur Rahman addressed as special guests.
Obaidur Rahman Mondal discussed tremendous successes achieved by Bangladesh in increasing food output in the last thirteen years to attain self-reliance on food production despite the adverse impacts of climate change.
The speakers said that ensuring sustainable food security might not be possible without continuous innovation and adoption of climate resilient agriculture technologies to keep crop production increasing despite the climate change. They put special importance on ensuring maximum use of cultivable land and bringing every inch of land under crop farming to enhance food production under the global crises caused by the pandemic and the war.
Shamimur Rahman, an agriculture scientist, have been successfully evolving climate resilient, more stress-tolerant crop varieties and newer cropping patterns to adapt to climate change and increase food output for attaining sustainable food security.
The chief guest called for engaging inclusive efforts to bring every inch of cultivable land under crop farming to increase crop output for ensuring sustainable food security despite attaining self-reliance in food production in the country.
