Call for curbing pesticide use

In a joint initiative by CAB International (CABI) and the Department of Agricultural Extension, a comprehensive workshop was held on reducing the risks of pesticide useat Lakeshore hotel in the capital on Monday. 

Department of Agriculture Extension Director General Badal Chandra Biswas was present as chief guest while Director of Plant Quarantine Wing (DAE)Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, Director of Plant Protection Wing (DAE)Md Ashraf Uddin were present as special guests.

Dr. Malvika Chaudhury, CABI Regional Coordinator for Plantwise programme in Asia, Professor Dr. Ruhul Amin of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Professor Dr. Md. Golam Sarwar of  NIPSAM, Additional Deputy Director (IPM), PPW, DAE KarimaAktarand Additional Deputy Director (PA), Plant Protection Wing, DAE Mr. ShamimHossen presented insightful articles.

Dr. Md. Saleh Ahmed, country representative of CABI, Bangladesh, Manju Thakur from CABI India Center, Knowledge Bank Coordinator, and GaneshamoorthyRajendran, crop health advisor, Dr. Syed NurulAlam, senior consultant, CYMMIT, also participated in the workshop.

At the workshop, the speakers discussed about the status of pesticide use and proposed several recommendations to reduce the risk of chemical pesticidemisuse, aiming to mitigate the human health and environmental hazards posed to living organisms. 

This workshop calls for much efforts on the involvement of all relevant stakeholders to reduce pesticide risk in Bangladesh. CABI's efforts in reducing the risks of pesticide use were commendably acknowledged for their contribution to human health and environmental preservation.
