By-elections to six seats, that have fallen vacant due to resignations of BNP lawmakers, have warmed up the political arena in the country.

Elections to those six seats are scheduled for February 1.

Besides, a dramatic situation has also been created following one of the five former BNP lawmakers deciding to take part in the by-election as an independent candidate immediately after his resignation from the same seat.

Most of the major parties are getting prepared for the election while many individuals are also taking part in the elections as independent candidates.

The ruling Awami League led 14-party alliance is taking part in the by elections jointly. The Awami League has decided to nominate candidates for three of those six seats while two other seats have been sacrificed for two of its allies--Workers Party of Bangladesh and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) and another kept open to all.

Awami League (AL) picked Ziaur Rahman for Chapainawabganj-2 constituency, Md Abdul Wadud for Chapainawabganj-3 and Ragebul Ahsan for Bogura-6 constituencies.

The ruling party, however, spared the Bogura-4 constituency for JSD and Thakurgaon-3 constituency for Workers Party while Brahmanbaria-2 constituency was kept open for all.

The Jatiya Party has decided to take part in the election to four seats alone. It has nominated Hafiz Uddin Ahmed for Thakurgaon-3, Md Nurul Islam Omar for Bogura-6, Shahin Mostafa Kamal Bogura-4 and Md Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan for Brahmanbaria-2.

On the other hand, although BNP is not taking part in the by-election, some of its leaders are also taking part in the election as independent candidates.

Former BNP lawmaker Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan is contesting for Brahmanbaria-2 as an independent candidate although he had resigned from the same seat a few days ago. He also resigned from the BNP

Meanwhile, centring on his participation, the BNP is facing another internal crisis. The party also expelled him from all the posts of the BNP.

Moreover, Ashraful Hossain Alam alias Hero Alam has collected nomination papers for contesting the upcoming by-election for Bogura-4 and Bogura-6  (Sadar, Kahalu, Nandigram) constituencies as an independent candidate.

Hero Alam collected his nomination papers from the Bogura Election Commission office in the afternoon.

District Election Officer and Assistant returning officer Mahmud Hasan provided the nomination papers to him.

Hero Alam said “Election and acting are two different things and I would like to entertain people through different programmes after becoming a public representative. I want to remain with the public and that’s why people will cast their votes in my favor.”
