Winter vegetables have started arriving at the capital’s kitchen markets yet prices of all kinds of vegetables remain high.
Potato is still selling at Tk 45 per kilogram (kg), while the onion is Tk 90 per kg, broiler chicken price has also increased Tk 10 per kg.
On the other hand, hilsa fish has also started to arrive in different markets with the fishing ban lifted by the authority.
However, the buyers complained that the price of vegetables is still high while vendors say prices will fall further if supply increases as per local demand.
The situation was observed during visits to some of the capital’s largest wholesale kitchen markets - Karwan Bazar, Rampura, Malibagh, Segunbagicha, Fakirapool, Motijheel T&T Colony Bazar, and Khilgaon kitchen markets on Friday.
During the visit, this reporter found most of the kitchen markets full of early winter vegetables including cauliflower, cabbages, beans, and others. However, none of them was selling at less than Tk 50 per kg.
Despite the government fixing the price, potato is still high, tomato and beans are selling at Tk 130, green chilis at Tk 160 to Tk 200 per kg, carrots TK 60 to Tk 80 per kg, long beans Tk 100, and brinjal Tk 80 to Tk 110. Most of the other vegetable prices remain between Tk 60 to Tk 100 with only papaya selling below Tk 50 a kg.
Rampura Kitchen Market vegetable trader Ibrahim said , “Winter is knocking at the door, vegetables have not arrived as per demand. Due to flood and rain, most of the seasonal cropland was damaged. As a result, the price of vegetables is still high. But we hope with adequate supply, price will fall shortly”.
Meanwhile, the broiler chicken price has increased slightly. It is now selling at Tk 130 to Tk 140 per kg against the price of Tk 120 to Tk 130 per kg a week ago.
On the other hand, hilsa fish has already started arriving but the supply is not sufficient. Traders said it will take a few more days to get abuzz with hilsa fish in the market. However, a kg hilsa is selling at Tk 800 to Tk 900.
