Buy a book, save Ifty’s life

Students of the Anthropology Department of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have organised a book fair called ‘Adammya’ to raise fund for their fellow student Tahsin Tabassum Ifty’s treatment.

Tahsin Tabassum Ifty, a third-year student of Anthropology department of SUST, has been suffering from Lymph Node Cancer. 

According to her physicians, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the body's germ-fighting immune system

She (Ifty) is undergoing treatment at a hospital. This type of cancer is more aggressive than other cancers.

The book fair is now going at Arjuntola on the SUST campus.  

Quoting doctors, the students told the Bangladesh Post that about Tk 15 lakh is needed for Ifty’s treatment that is beyond her ability. Therefore, apart from seeking financial support from the well offs, the students will run the book fair until raise the required fund for Ifty’s treatment. The book fair remains open from 10am to 5pm every day but Friday and Saturday. The book fair remains open from 3pm to 7pm Friday and Saturday. They are selling these books to teachers and students. 

Along with Ifty's family, classmates, friends, senior and junior students of her department are working hard to collect the huge amount of money. 

The students have collected many second hand or old books from different sources and these books are now being displayed at stall for sale. They are collecting books from the students of every residential halls of the university and different messes where students also reside.  Besides, many people are also giving books voluntarily for book fair.

Many students, who are now staying far away from Sylhet, are also sending books through courier to book fair.

Apart from teachers and students, many people are visiting the book stalls to purchasing books. Ifty's classmates said that they got a good response from the students by selling books on the first day of the book fair. 

“Our book fair will continue. Anyone can submit their favorite books here and come and buy books here. Besides, anyone can o send books through courier service,” they said.  Also if anyone wants he or she can pay for Ifty's treatment here.  Although Ifty’s family members have managed some taka for chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, it is impossible for them to afford another huge amount of money to continue her treatment.
