This year has brought a bumper yield of egg plants at the shore side of Sangu River and Shankh River of Dohazari, southern region of Chattogram district. Farmers are happy with their production as they are getting fare price. Every year, thousands of farmers from villages along the banks of the Shankh River are cultivating vegetables. Among their production, eggplant is different which is only produced in this region.
Light violet and green in color, round shaped eggplants are totally different in the country. This vegetable is being cultivated around the year, but in winter the production gets doubled. This is locally known as ‘Sangur Begun’. Farmers of the shore side river started to bring their produce by small boats to the local markets. They are happy as they are getting reasonable price for the production. They said, this variety of eggplant is only found in Dohazari.
“Its size comparing to other variants of the vegetable is different. It is also unique for its color, shape and taste. Its price is also comparatively cheaper, which is affordable by everyone”, a farmer said. Chittagong Department of Agriculture Extension information showed, they are providing suggestions to field level farmers. In addition, they are also training and advising them to cultivate vegetables following scientific ways. Due to this, the prevalence of eggplants among the cultivation of other vegetables is increasing every year in the Chattogram.
