Bumper yield of sugarcane in Ctg

Farmers observed bumper yield of sugarcane in Raozan Upazila of Chattogram district this year. As the farming cost is low, farmers are making good profit by farming sugarcane in vast crop lands.

Many farmers are being interested in sugarcane cultivation due to the high profit and low farming cost of sugarcane.

When this correspondent visited several areas of the Upazila, it was seen that farmers cultivated sugarcane in large areas of lands in the upazila. Some farmers were harvesting sugarcane and taking those to the market to sell. Some traders were seen coming to the sugarcane fields and buying the crop from the farmers to sell them in the market. The farmers were happy with yield of sugarcane this year.

Sources from Raozan Department of Agricultural Extension said sugarcane was cultivated in 30 hectares of lands in Haldia union, Dabua union, Chikdair union, Gohira union, Kodolpur union, Noajishpur union, Raozan union, Paschimgujra union and municipality areas.

Gobinda, a farmer of Noajishpur union, said that he cultivates sugarcane in 40 to 60 decimals of land every year. He cultivates sugarcane every year as the cultivation cost is low. He spent Tk 35,000 for sugarcane cultivation this year and the yield was good. He can sell sugarcane of Tk 1 lakh, excluding the cultivation cost.

Taslim Uddin, farmer of Chikdair union, said he spent Tk 30,000 to cultivate sugarcane in 40 decimals of lands. He expressed his hope that he would be able to sell sugarcane of Tk 1 lakh from his field. He is also getting good price in hat and markets as the yield was good.

Large sized sugarcane was being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 100 per piece and small size sugarcane was being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 40 in the market. Raozan Upazila Agricultural Officer Masum Kabir said the sugarcane farmers in the upazila are making a good profit. Moreover, the number of sugarcane farmers is also increasing.

Fine variety of sugarcane was cultivated in 30 hectares of land in the upazila. A total of 110 metric tonnes of sugarcane was produced in each hectare of land and the total production in 30 hectares of land was 3,300 metric tonnes of sugarcane. Farmers made a profit of Tk 1 to Tk 2 lakh per hectare excluding the cultivation cost.
