The farmers of Tarash in Sirajganj have achieved bumper yield of cucumber this season. They are profiting due to the good price of cucumber in the market.

Centering the sale of cucumber, a big market has sat in Digharia area of the Upazila. Every day farmers from different villages of the Upazila gather in this market to sell cucumber. Meanwhile, wholesalers from different districts also come here to buy cucumbers. These cucumbers are also sent to different parts of the country including Dhaka, Rajshahi and Chattogram.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Department, cucumber has been cultivated in 427 hectares of land in the Upazila this season which is 75 hectares more than last year's target. Cucumber cultivation is increasing every year as it is more profitable than Boro paddy cultivation.

This year, due to favorable weather and timely availability of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides, the bumper yield of cucumber has been harvested.

It has been observed that that out of the eight unions of the upazila, cucumber cultivation has been comparatively more in Digharia, Kusumbi, Baruhas and Binsara of Baruhas Union, Talam, Namasilot, Uparsilot, Ranir Hat and Gulta of Talam Union, Katabari, Nadosaidpur, Bilnado and Binnabaru of Saguna Union, Charhamkuria, Hamkuria, Ghargram and Dobila villages of Magurabinod Union.

In all these areas, besides Boro paddy, cucumber has been extensively cultivated in the crop fields. Hundreds of metric tons of cucumber is being bought and sold every day from the market. Every day 45 to 50 metric tonnes of cucumber is sent to the capital Dhaka.

Cucumber farmer Rahman Ali of Digharia village said, “This year I have cultivated cucumber in three bighas of land. It has cost Tk 50 to 55 thousand to cultivate on three bighas of land. The yield has been much better as the weather was favorable. If the market price is good, the profit will be around Tk 50 to 60 thousand excluding the cost.

Rafiqul Islam, a farmer of Binsara village in the upazila, said, “Besides cultivating paddy, we have cultivated cucumber on 2.5 bighas of land this year. In the current market, cucumber is being sold at Tk 1,150 to 1,200 per sack. If the market price remains this way, the profit will be Tk 38 to 40 thousand for 2.5 bighas of land.”

Sirajul Islam, a cucumber wholesaler from Dhaka, said, “Every year I come to this area and sell cucumber in Dhaka city. There is a lot of demand for the cucumber of Tarash in different parts of the country as it is delicious. However, this year the price of cucumber is a little higher than other years.”

Upazila Agriculture Officer Lutfunnahan Luna said, “Cucumber cultivation is very favourable in the croplands of the Upazila. The people of the agriculture office have been cooperating with the farmers all the time by encouraging and advising them in cultivating cucumber.

Farmers can profit more by cultivating cucumber that other agricultural products.”
