Bumper paddy production in Bagerhat, farmers eye high return

Fields of Bagerhat district’s Sarankhola Upazila are full of ripe Aman paddy. All around the field is becoming full of aroma of new paddy. The bumper production and good prices have put smiles on the faces of farmers. Farmers are busy threshing and threshing paddy. Besides, Nabanna festival is going on from house to house.

According to upazila agriculture office sources, Aman paddy has been cultivated in about 70 thousand bighas of land in the upazila this year. Rice includes various varieties of rice including BRRI paddy 35, 52, 49, 71, 73, 87, 76. 50 farmers have been given exhibition in this season. Besides, 20 kg of fertilizer and 5 kg of paddy have been given to 650 people as incentives. 300 farmers have been given seed assistance.

Nazrul Islam Molla, a successful farmer of Dakshin Kadamtala village of the upazila, said that he has planted rice in more than 200 bighas of land. He said that the harvest this year has not happened in the last three or four years. He has already cut and threshed 30/35 bigha of paddy. About 20 mounds of paddy have been harvested per bigha. He said this year the insect attack on the land was less. Apart from this, Hasem Howladar of Dakshin Rajapur village of the upazila, Emadul Howladar of Lakurtala village, Badal Akon of Khada village said about bumper crop. Upazila Awami League President and Rayenda Union Parishad Chairman Alhaj Ajmal Hossain Mukta and Khontakata Union Parishad Chairman Zakir Hossain Khan Mohiuddin said that Cyclone Sitrang was a blessing for us after the field dried up. A bumper production of crop this year was achieved due to good crop due to rains. We have not seen such yield in two or four years. Thanks to the almighty for this.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Debbrat Sarkar told this correspondent that due to favorable weather conditions and less insect attack in Aman paddy cultivation this year, super bumper yield has been achieved, various steps have been taken to increase the awareness of farmers in order to prevent insects and get expected harvest. 

Besides the bumper yield this year, the farmers are smiling due to the good price of paddy.
