Mustard cultivation is becoming more popular as an additional crop in Magura. This year more than 13,495 hectares of land has been cultivated in mustard of expected. The Department of Agriculture Extension expects to produce 1.32 metric tonnes of mustard per hectare.
Shusanto Kumar Pramanik, Deputy Director of the Magura Agriculture Extension Department, said that the target for cultivation in 4 upazilas about 13,495 hectres this year. In Magura Sadar Upazila on 7,220 hectares, on Shreepur upazila 600 hectare, Salika upazila on 4,475 hectares and on Mohammadpur upazila 1,200 hectares are cultivated.
On the ground, it is found in the field of mustard Magura sadar upazilas Kapashati, Moghi, Parnanduali. Shreepur upazilas, Kamalapur, Khamarpara, Barishat. On Mohammadpur upazila Babukhali, Nohata and Gangarampur, Rajapur, and Kumarkutha of Shalikha Upazila are cultivated. After the Aman paddy harvest, the land is abandoned for some time. Farmers are benefiting from cultivating mustard as an additional crop on that land.
The cultivation of mustard is also becoming popular day by day with little care and low cost cultivation. Farmers are expecting favorable weather conditions and good yields if the disease is not sown.
Rashid Molla, a mustard farmer in Kapashati of Magura Sadar, said that the cost of cultivating mustard in his two bigha land was cost 35 to 40 Thousand taka.
Mustard can be cultivated only with seeds and a little fertilizer. He is expecting 2,000 taka for every Mon of mustard from his field.
Shusanto Kumar Pramanik, deputy director of the Magura Agriculture Extension Department also said that the varieties of BARI-9,14,17 and varieties have been cultivated this season. Farmers have been promoted and trained by the Department of Agriculture Extension.
We’ve give fertilizer and seed about 3,500 farmers for free cost this year. If the weather is favorable, this season will produce a mustard bumper.
