Islampur Upazila in Jamalpur achieved a bumper yield of maize this season. The popularity of maize cultivation is increasing day by day as farmers benefit from low cost in a short period of time. Due to the advantages of low capital, risk-free irrigation and fertilizer application, the competition of maize cultivation among farmers is increasing.
Due to the favorable weather conditions, the farmers in Kulkandi, Belgacha, Sapdhari, Patharshi Chinaduli, Palbandha, Gaibandha, Goaler Char, Char Goalini, remote areas of Noarpara Union of the upazila have had a smile on their faces because of the expected yield of maize.
The farmers said that the maize produced in the upazila is met and supplied elsewhere. Several farmers said that with the help of the Department of Agricultural Extension, they have played a role in changing their fortunes by cultivating improved varieties of maize. At present, farmers are spending busy time to bring home the Maize yield.
According to Upazila Agriculture Office sources, maize has been cultivated in 1720 hectares of land this year. A target of 18 thousand 575 tonnes has been set. Farmers in grasslands and remote areas are easily earning more from maize than other crops.
Lipon Mia, a farmer of Palbandha Union, said that he can grow maize in the house in just 3/4 months. This crop should not be watered more than twice. Besides, less fertilizer and ten to twelve thousand Maize seedlings can be planted in one bigha of land.
As the yield is good, the farmers are expecting double profit. Malek Mondal, a maize farmer of the same union, said that corn can be harvested in a few days. Jute cultivation also has benefits after maize cultivation.
He also said that the Upazila Agriculture Office always keeps track. Each plant holds one or two mochas. Maize can be sold for thirty Tk per kg. It is possible to earn good money by cultivating maize. Going to different areas of the upazila, it was seen that farmers are spending busy time in many areas to harvest corn.
In this regard, Upazila Agriculture Officer A, L, M Rezwan said that due to unfavorable weather conditions, the yield of maize has been very good. This year's target has been exceeded. Assistant Agricultural Officers are always engaged to assist the farmers. So this year also corn farmers will benefit.
