Bumper jute production, fair prices cheer Jhenaidah farmers

Jute selling at Tk 3,800 to 4,200 per maund

Rise in jute price has delighted the farmers in six Jhenaidah upazilas. They are expecting further rise in the price in near future. Each maund of 40 kilogram jute fibre is selling at taka 3,800 to 4,200 in the markets. It has been encouraging the farmers and the area of jute farming expected to be expanded in the district in next season. 

When the trend in rising of jute price, the wholesalers from country’s most popular jute market at Daulatpur of Khulna were showing much interest in purchasing the jute fibre since a week, said the farmers.. 

Abdul Matin of village Manaharpur in Shailkupa in Jhenaidah when contacted at the weekly market on Tuesday said he had produced 14 maunds of jute fibre on his one bigha of land for 40 decimals land in the season. The yield was almost good and he was receiving better price from the stating of the harvesting season about two weeks back. He was expecting at least Taka 55 thousand from his one bigha of land. Another farmer Ratul Biswas at Kalicharanpur village in Jhenaidah sadar upazila when contacted at the market, said the farmers like him were receiving Taka 3,800 4,300 for each maund of 40 kilograms, while they were witnessing fall in the market a week back.  The farmers said a farmer counts Taka 25 to 30 thousand for seeds, fertilizer, irrigation, jute cutting, rotten, day labourer and transport costs for each bigha of 40 land. As the price starting rising it will ensure them some money from the once lost glory of the golden fibre. The good price showing ray of hope before the jute farmers once again, they said.

The farmers said they were hopeful to see better price of the jute fibre in last  week, while they were quite hopeless to see the price fall in the market in last weeks. If the price rising trend continues anymore in near and far future, the farmers might be encourgaed and the farming area might be expanded in next seasons, they said. 

Emdad Sheikh and Rathindra Nath, two jute brokers from Daulatpur jute market in Khulna when contacted in the jute market at Shailkupa in Jhenaidah, said their Mahajan (owner of the business centre) had advised them to purchase jute fibre as much as they can do as the price was rising gradually. They have been maintaining the guidelines and showing interest during purchasing the same, brokers Emdad Sheikh and Rathindra Nath, said.

Deputy director (DD) of the department of agriculture extension (DAE) in Khamarbari of Jhenaidah Sasti Chandra Roy when contacted, had praise the rising trend of jute price in recent days. 

He said the present price will encourage the farmers to cultivate the crop on additional land in the next. The field level officials of the DAE were advised to advice the jute farmers so that they could use the modern technology, improve seeds, use balanced fertilizer on their plots to strengthen their socio-economic base, DAE DD Sasti Chandra Roy said.
