Bumper Irri-Boro production expected in Chandpur

In 2018-2019 fiscal year, there is possibility of bumper irri-boro production at 8 Upazilas in Chandpur.  The Agriculture Department hopes to produce bumper production in Chandpur this year. It is likely to produce 2,48,744 metric tonnes rice from 62,186 hectares of land.

Krishibid Abdul Mannan of Department of Agriculture Department (DAE) in Chandpur told it on Tuesday.

According to source, Chandpur target to cultivate 61,560 hectares of land this year to produce 2, 46,274 metric tonnes rice. Hybrid, local and improved varieties of Irri-Boro are cultivated here. 

Meanwhile Chandpur irrigation and Meghna Dhanagoda irrigation projects, Matlab South and Hajiganj are widely cultivated with Irri-Boro. For this purpose, scheduled banks of the districts has been allocated Tk 224.1 million to the farmers. 

According to DAE, Chandpur Sadar has 5,560 hectares of agricultural land targeting to produce 21,708 metric tons of rice, Matlab has 8,800 hectares of land targeting to produce of 34,426 metric tonnes of rice, Hajiganj has 9,825 hectares of land targetting 39,802 matric tones, Shaharasti has 9,351 hectares of land targeting to produce 39,894 metric tonnes of rice, Kachua has 12,600 hectares of land targeting to produce 49,550 metric tonnes, Faridganj cultivates 9,920 hectares of land targeting to produce 39,401 MT and Himchchar cultivates 629 hectares of land targeting to produce 23, 96 metric tonnes rice.

Now farmers use advanced farming instruments like tractor instead of ploughshare, power run shallow or deep tube wells instead of hochar, different types of advanced chemical fertilizers instead of manure, improved seeds and modest pesticides in their field.  

Agri-Boro has the potentiality in bumper production as the government helps the farmers with fertilizer, improved seed, and giving 20% subsidy on power based irrigation to strengthen food security in the country, Krishibid Abdul Mannan said.
