A bumper production of coriander is likely as the farmers have exceeded the fixed farming target and tender coriander plants growing excellent in all the 13 upazilas of the district during the current Rabi season.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have cultivated coriander on 440 hectares of land 30 hectares higher than the fixed target of bringing 410 hectares under its farming in the district with production target of 550 metric tonnes.

Of the total land, 20 hectares of land would be brought in Hossainpur upazila, 20 hectares each in Kishoreganj Sadar and Bajitpur upazila, 7 hectares in Pakundia upazila, 54 hectares in Katiadi upazila, 54 hectares in Karimganj upazila, 27 hectares in Tarail upazila, 20 hectares in Itna upazila, 27 hectares in Mithamain upazila, 40 hectares in Nikli upazila, 94 hectares in Austagram upazila, 20 hectares in Bajitpur upazila, 134 hectares in Bhairab upazila and 33 hectares in Kuliarchar upazila.

The farmers have achieved the success following effective steps taken by the DAE to increase coriander production with assistance of the concerned agriculture related departments and other organisations.

Besides, the government's special steps of providing agri-loans at lower interest rate for enhancing production of spicy crops have further encouraged the farmers on large scale coriander farming this season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Kishoreganj Deputy Director (In-charge) Dr. Mohit Kumar Dey said the farmers have been showing more interest in farming coriander after getting repeated bumper production and fair price in recent years.
