Bumper production of bean and its fair price have delighted the farmers of Kishoreganj district in this year. 13 upazila- Kishoreganj Sadar, Hossainpur, Pakundia, Katiadi, Tarail, Karimganj, Itna, Mithamoin, Austagram, Nikli, Bajitpur, Kuliarchar, Bhairab saw bumper bean production of the winter vegetable.
The growers have been successful in cultivating two new varieties of bean- BARI-4 and IPSA-1 in the district, which brought good luck for them.
A total of 860 hectares of land have been brought under bean cultivation of the district this season, said Department of Agriculture Extension Officer (In-Charge) Dr. Mohit Kumer Dey. "Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has taken steps to provide the growers with high yielding varieties of seeds, organic fertilizers, insecticides and other inputs for making the programme a success."
The farmers have showed their interests in cultivating the vegetable, as it is more profitable than any other traditional crops for its easy farming.
Borhan Uddin, of the Jangalia village under Pakundia upazila, said the weather conditions, so far, are favouring the bean cultivation. He added that it would take less time than usual to extract the beans, if the weather remains consistent. The authorities concerned have taken adequate steps for ensuring smooth supply of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, technical assistant and others inputs to the bean growers at grassroots level. Besides, commercial banks, other financial institutions and NGO's provided easy term agriculture loans in this connection.
On the other hand, necessary training and advices were given to the cultivations for ensuring maximum production said by Dr. Mohit Kumer Dey, Department of Agriculture Extension Officer (In-Charge) of the DAE, Kishoreganj.
