It is good to note that the government has embarked on a massive initiative to create 3 crore jobs by 2030. While briefing a post budget press conference on Friday Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that her government is very serious about addressing the unemployment issue.  Already the government has integrated a three-year programme to increase the job creation rate in the industrial sector through improvement of business and investment environment.

Over the last years, the country has achieved remarkable economic growth but unemployment is still a serious problem for innumerable youths including the educated ones. Still employment opportunities are not available comparing to the number of labour force entering the job market every year. Moreover, inconsistency between job market and education system has contributed to swelling of the number of educated unemployed. Currently, the country is burdened with 26.77 lakh unemployed people, that include a big number of higher educated youths.

In the budget, Tk 100 crore has been allocated for the training and employment of specific groups of people. There has always been a demand for skilled workers abroad, but most of Bangladeshi workers are unskilled. Thus a huge number of Bangladeshi workers fail to manage a good job after going abroad. It is envisaged that the initiative to create 3 crore jobs by 2030 will help the country exploit the potential of its young population by providing them with technical education, encouraging them to become entrepreneurs by ensuring easy loans.

We are happy to note that the government has given more importance on producing skilled workers in its development agenda. It is needless to say that by producing skilled manpower, we can reduce pressure on Dhaka’s job markets.
