Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) organized a seminar on National Budget 2019-2020 on Sunday (June 30, 2019) at the International Conference Hall in its permanent campus at Mirpur in Dhaka, says a press release.

Department of Economics, BUBT arranged this seminar entitled ‘A Review on Proposed Budget of FY 2019-20: Prospects and Challenges’.

Prof Dr Mustafizur Rahman, Distinguished Fellow, Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) made a review on budget as the Chief Guest. He said that budget allocation in education, health and agriculture sectors is not sufficient and it should be more logical and need based. Though this is a deficit budget, it would be implementable if the govt. ensures transparency, accountability and reduces the cost of nonperforming loans and reduces indirect taxes.   The prominent economist also said that the government must remove the obstacles of distributing funds among young entrepreneurs and they should show zero tolerance on bank defaulters. Budget alone cannot address these issues we need others policies as well. The government should see that Bangladesh is running but other countries are running fast.

Prof Dr Shafique Ahmed Siddique, Chairman, BUBT Trust, also spoke as the Special Guest. He said that we should avoid the tendency of tax evasion. It will hamper our economic growth. Currently our economy is dependent on farmers, RMG workers and expatriates. Budget allocation can be more effective if the govt. conducts surveys before.

Prof Md Abu Saleh, Vice Chancellor, BUBT presided over the session.  He said that we should not except that the budget will be 100% accurate. Though it is over ambitious, we can be positive about its implementation.

Dr Md Mahmudul Hasan, Assistant Professor of Economics, BUBT presented the seminar paper. Dr Syed Masud Husain, Dean, Faculty of Business and of Social Sciences delivered the welcome speech and Sirajul Islam, Chairman, Department of Economics gave a vote of thanks.

Distinguished guests, Members of BUBT Trust, Treasurer, Advisor, Students’ Affairs, and Deans of different faculties, Director, MBA, Registrar, Controller of Exams, Joint Registrar, chairmen of different departments, Proctor, officials, teachers and students attended the seminar.
