The authorities concerned have shut a good number of Internet Protocol Televisions (IPTVs) as those were not having broadcasting approval.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said on Sunday that they have already shut 59 such unregistered illegal IPTV.

IPTV is the process of broadcasting content using the Internet Protocol Network which usually broadcasts on satellite television. BTRC only allows licensed ISPs to provide IP-based data services (such as streaming services, IP TV, video on demand).

ISP operators approved by the BTRC for IPTV services will only be able to show the broadcasts of satellite TV channels approved by the Ministry of Information through the Internet to their subscribers.

However, the necessary contract, approval and clearance for the promotion of each channel or program or content have to be obtained from the concerned provider.

Recently, it has been noticed that some unscrupulous traders are illegally buying domains / showing IPTV to the public through Facebook / YouTube channels, which have no legal sanction.

Such broadcasting without approval is immoral and a violation of the Telecommunications Act.

Therefore, 59 such unregistered illegal IPTVs have already been shut down by the commission. There is no involvement of ISPs approved by the BTRC for IP-based data services with these activities.
