BTRC Chairman urges Meta to be more active in preventing rumours

BTRC Chairman drew the attention of the authorities Meta about the rumours and misinformation shared on various issues on the social media and urged to take more effective measures to stop and prevent theses. BTRC Chairman Prof. Mohiuddin Ahmed expressed this while  a delegation of tech giant Meta called on Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on Thursday. 

Public Policy Head of Meta Ruzan Sarwar, Privacy and AI Matter Expert Aryan G Menage, Content Expert Nayantara Narayan, Content Policy Expert Jonathan Lewis and Policy Program Manager Ruscitio were present in the meeting, held at the BTRC office at Agargaon in the capital.

The delegation briefed the BTRC Chairman on various current issues of Facebook including their activities in Bangladesh and regular communication with BTRC.  He stressed the importance of taking quick action about the false rumurs , mentioning that there is a fear of spread of misinformation, rumours as a large number of internet users in the country use Facebook, Instagram platforms.

The BTRC Chairman requested the Facebook authorities to pay more attention to using the Meta platform to prevent criminals from promoting fraudulent activities, betting or gambling. Ruzan Sarwar, head of public policy at Meta welcomed the BTRC's views and vowed to work more closely with the BTRC.
