BSMRSTU shuts down amid movement for VC’s resignation

The authorities of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj have shut down the university until October 3 amid movement demanding resignation of the university Vice Chancellor (VC).

Meanwhile, at least 20 students were injured in the attack by VC supporters at different places on Saturday. Some of them were taken to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital.

The incidents of attack took place in Gobra, Sobhan Road, Shonakur, and Nabinbagh areas.

The demonstrating students alleged that they came under attack by the supporters of the vice chancellor. They claimed that the food deliveries to the hostels were suspended from Friday night while electricity and water supply were cut from Saturday morning. They were later came under attack.

All entrances, including the main gate of the university, were shut down and traffic movement on the campus was suspended, according to the protesters.

RAB and police have been deployed to maintain law and order on the campus.

The authorities made the decision of closing the university on Saturday as the students have been demanding the resignation of VC Prof Dr Khondoker Md Nasiruddin. “The university has declared the closure to bring the situation under control," said Nuruddin Ahmed, the university registrar.

Protests erupted at the university after Fatema Tuz Zinia, a second-year student of law department and reporter of a daily, was suspended over a Facebook post on September 11.

The university authorities later withdrew the suspension order. However, the students continued to protest on the campus demanding the VC’s resignation for his alleged irregularities and corruption.
