With the efforts of the infertility experts of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), a test-tube baby was born for the first time in BSMMU. The test tube baby was born at the hospital at about 9:30am on Wednesday (October 25).
The baby was born through a caesarean section. The birth took place under the supervision of Dr Jesmin Banu, head of the Reproductive Endocrine and Infertility Department. Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor of the BSMMU, was present during the birth.
The Barishal couple, who became parents for the first time, had been dealing with issues related to infertility for about 13 years. They had sought treatment in different places, but found no resolution.
In 2022, the couple began In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) at the Department of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at BSMMU.
This is where they were offered the ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection), a method where sperm cells are injected into the egg’s cytoplasm.
After proper treatment, the mother of this newborn got pregnant in February this year and the test tube baby was finally born.
Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed said this was another feather in the cap of the hospital. He hoped the successful birth would encourage other childless couples to seek treatment at the hospital.
Dr Jesmin Banu said that usually 5-10% of infertility patients require IVF procedure.
Earlier in September, for the first time in Bangladesh, under government management, a test tube baby was born at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). The first test-tube baby in the country was born in 2001 at a private facility.
