BSFIC seminar stresses product diversification, agro-based industrialisation to revive sugar mills

Dhaka, September 5, 2026: A seminar organised by the Zia Parishad of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) has stressed product diversification, agro-based industrialisation and the reopening of closed sugar mills to address the ongoing challenges facing the state-owned sugar industry.

The seminar, titled “Existing Problems of BSFIC Mills and Ways to Overcome Them,” was held at the boardroom of the Sugar Industry Bhaban at 10:00am on September 2.

BSFIC Chairman Md Shamsuzzaman Suruj attended the seminar as the chief guest. Joint Secretary and BSFIC Director (Cane Development and Research) Dr Abdul Alim Khan, Zia Parishad General Secretary Md Golam Rabbani, Organising Secretary Md Ashraf Sarker (Jewel) and other leaders were also present.

BSFIC directors, its secretary, heads of various departments, Zia Parishad President Md Abu Raihan and Vice-President Md Hasanuzzaman, along with managing directors and other officials of all sugar mills under the corporation, joined the seminar virtually through Zoom.

The participants held detailed discussions on the existing problems of the sugar mills, ways to increase productivity and measures to overcome the sector’s longstanding challenges.

Speaking as the chief guest, BSFIC Chairman Md Shamsuzzaman Suruj said initiatives had been taken to revive the corporation’s closed sugar mills in line with the aspirations of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to reopen closed factories, create extensive employment opportunities and strengthen the country’s economic growth.

He said the government was working to bring the mills back to profitability by reducing losses through the efficient utilisation of by-products and introducing product diversification.

The chairman also highlighted agro-based industrialisation as a key strategy for transforming BSFIC into a profitable organisation.

He said various plans and measures had already been taken to diversify the products of the mills by making effective use of their by-products and to develop agro-based industries.

In his concluding remarks, the BSFIC chairman directed all officials and employees to perform their respective duties with the highest level of sincerity, dedication and honesty to restore dynamism to the corporation and ensure the successful implementation of the initiatives undertaken.
