Theatre troupe Sangskar Natyadal staged two allegorical plays depicting human nature at Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Tuesday evening.
The plays are ‘Bhul Swarga’ and ‘Mahapatanga’.
‘Bhul Swarga’ is an adaptation of Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore’s short story with the same title and ‘Mahapatanga’ is an adaptation of Abu Ishak’s anti-war story.
Adapted and directed by Yusuf Hassan Arka, Bhul Swarga satirises the materialistic life. It revolves around an artist, who goes to heaven only to find that the heaven dwellers are all workaholics.
They spend their days making valuable objects and have no interest in art. However, the artist decides to make crafts because it makes him happy. Gradually the heaven dwellers begin to notice this. They all stop working and gather around the artist, who makes crafts all day and does nothing else.
When the management notices this they deport the artist to earth from heaven for influencing the heaven dwellers with his ‘unproductive’ activities.
“The play satirises our contemporary society where a person’s success is measured in terms of his material possessions,” said Badhan Roy.
Mahapatanga, adapted by Rubaiyat Ahmed and directed by Habib Masud, portrays helpful and destructive aspects of human beings through experiences of two birds.
“Mahapatanga is a touching anti-war story told from the perspective of two birds, which we consider a symbol of peace,” said Habiba Mahmood.
Fatema-tuz-Zohra Eva, Bappy Saif, Pritha Dey, Suajn Kirtonya, Masud Kabir, Ratna Islam, Selim Reza Swapan, Nodi Saif, Shihabul Islam, Manami Islam Kanak and others acted in the two plays.
