Theatre troupe Theatre Factory staged a show of its production ‘Asharashya Pratham Dibashey’ on Sunday at Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).
The play, an adaptation of the Indian play ‘Ashadh Ka Ek Din’ authored by Mohan Rakesh, has been directed by Alok Basu and translated into Bangla by Angshuman Bhowmik.
‘Asharashya Pratham Dibashey’ was staged in association with Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
The story of the play revolves around the mythical love story between legendary poet Kalidas and a young girl Mallika.
Kalidas is a young poet living in a Himalayan village. He feels deeply connected to his mother land. Rain, hills, greenery, soil and other elements of his village are the subjects of his write-ups.
Meanwhile the king of Ujjayini offers Kalidas a place in his royal court but he refuses to leave his motherland.
Though the villagers, including Mallika’s mother, fail to comprehend Kalidas’ merit, Mallika convinces Kalidas that he will gain popularity if he goes to the capital.
Kalidas travels to the capital at request of Mallika and gradually achieves fame as poet. At one point Kalidas marries the daughter of the king.
Kalidas becomes the ruler of the kingdom and decides to visit his village again.
He travels to the village and finds that a lot has changed over the years. He tries to pen poems again but fails to find suitable words. The play ends with Kalidas realising that back then it was Mallika who inspired him to pen his greatest works.
Sonjita Sharmin played Mallika and Ramiz Raju played Kalidas. Besides, Shamsun Nahar Beauty, Hasanuzzaman, Mishal Somapta, Suravi Roy and others acted in the play.
