Begum Rokeya University (BRU) in Rangpur is set to commemorate the first martyrdom anniversary of student Abu Sayed, observed as "July Shaheed Day," on July 16.

In preparation for the event, the university has announced a temporary restriction on campus entry for outsiders.

The restriction will be in effect from 7pm Sunday until 9am Wednesday to ensure heightened security and discipline.

Only students, faculty, officials, and staff with valid ID cards will be granted access to the campus during this period. The university administration has requested everyone’s cooperation in enforcing the security measures.

Additional police personnel have been deployed, as the university expects the attendance of several high-profile guests and seeks to prevent any disruption during the commemorative event.

BRU Proctor Ferdous Rahman said the security decision was made to ensure the safety of invited dignitaries and maintain order throughout the program. For first-year students yet to receive ID cards, department heads have been instructed to facilitate the issuance of temporary IDs from the Proctor’s Office.

A series of events will be held on July 16 in memory of Abu Sayed, recognized as the first martyr of last year’s anti-discrimination movement. His father, Mokbul Hossain, will attend the program as the chief guest.

Four government advisers are expected to attend the ceremony: Law Adviser Prof Dr Asif Nazrul, Education Adviser Prof. Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-e-Azam. Other notable attendees include University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr SMA Faiz, Education Ministry Senior Secretary Siddique Zobair, and UGC Member Prof Dr Tanzimuddin Khan. BRU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Showkat Ali said 21 family members of martyrs will also be present, adding: “It is essential that the campus remains secure and orderly throughout this important day of remembrance.”
