The British Council in Dhaka will host the premiere of the documentary "Khatak: The Story of an Unknown Giant" and inaugurate the "Rays of Hope" exhibition on July 18, at 4 PM. This event, organized by Bengal Elasmo Lab from the University of Dhaka, celebrates the marine megafauna of the Bay of Bengal.

Bengal Elasmo Lab, in collaboration with the British Council, invites everyone, especially youth, to participate in this educational event. Alifa Bintha Haque, the Founder of Bengal Elasmo Lab and an Associate Professor at the University of Dhaka, stated, "Conservation is about people's choices in nature and oceans. This event connects individuals with endangered megafauna like sharks, rays, and the largetooth sawfish, sparking discussions on safeguarding them for future generations."

The documentary on the endangered largetooth sawfish will premiere on 18 July, followed by a three-day photo exhibition showcasing the mysteries of the ocean. Shannon West, Director of British Council Bangladesh, expressed, "We are delighted to host this program to raise awareness about protecting the marine ecosystem. We commend Alifa Bintha Haque for her outstanding contributions to marine conservation and her recognition in our Study UK alumni program."

The opening day will feature a panel discussion on "Species Conservation in a Global South Country," addressing global challenges and the importance of marine fauna, fisheries, and fisher communities in fostering sustainable socioeconomic conditions. The discussion will emphasize the impact of bycatch and the need for awareness among fishers.

The "Rays of Hope" exhibition will be open from 18 to 21 July, promoting ocean literacy and conservation. Dr Shefali Begum, Chair of the Department of Zoology at the University of Dhaka, will inaugurate the exhibition.

This exhibition will feature striking photographs highlighting conservation efforts and the beauty of marine creatures.

Bengal Elasmo Lab, funded by Save Our Seas Foundation and supported by Dr Ruth Leeney, is dedicated to protecting sharks and rays in the Bay of Bengal through innovative science and community involvement.
