Brisk drug peddling continues in Rajshahi amid coronavirus scare

Taking the opportunity of busyness of law enforcers, the drug peddlers were learned to engage in hectic drug dealing with a regular assemblage of the addicts at the houses of the drug-retailers in Rajshahi. Police said that they were getting a little time to pay attention to the drug-related issues due to the current situation created following coronavirus spread.  

According to sources, a brisk and rapid expansion of drug peddling has restarted at the infamous Guripara area in Rajshahi city. The trade of Yaba and Heroin is now continuing unabated there where drug addicts from various parts of the city were now rushing whereas from Talaimari area of the city to the Tangon area of Charghat upazila, the hectic trade of Phensidyl is continuing through, in some areas, Heroin, Yaba and Cannabis or Marijuana (Ganja) are also being sold openly.

Though riding more than one person on a motor-bike has been restricted in the city to avoid coronavirus infection, the roads stretching through riverside of Padma from Guripara to Tangon are being used unabated and safely by the drug addicts through which two to three drug addicts, mainly young men, were running on a single motor bike. Most of those are addicted in Phensidyl and Yaba. Wherever they were getting those drug at a cheaper price, they were moving there to procure those. 

Though there is a ban on going out of the houses without emergency or essential needs, drug peddlers and drug addicts were coming out of their houses by defying the ban. Retailer drug traders were visiting the houses of the wholesale drug peddlers at the frontier villages and were returning their house to sell those to drug addicts. Women are being mainly engaged in the job of drug trafficking. 

On Wednesday, police arrested three women drug traffickers from in front of Rajshahi Medical College. They were identified as Reshma Khatun (22) wife of Sohel Rana of Pathanpara area, Kajal Rekha(22) wife of Liton Ali of Dingadoba area and Reshma Khatun(20) daughter of Khurshed Alam of Bosri area under Kashiadanga police station. Police recovered 100 pieces Yaba from their possession. 

It is learned, various types of drugs are being freely sold at Talaimari, Rajshahi court station, Railgate and rail station areas. At Talaimari Shahid Minar, some adolescent children were seen to sit all day and till late evening. Any one can purchase Heroin, Yaba and Canabis from them. If required, they also manage Phensidyl for some customers. They are learnt to drug selling agent of Idris, Lilly, Poly, Rohi and Komela. Komela is learnt to deal in a large retail drug trading by paying regular toll to police. 

Despite the panic of spreading of coronavirus, a huge quantity of Heroin is being smuggled to Godagari through various bordering routes. The drug trading continues openly at Mohishalbari and Madarpur areas of the upazila for a long time. Those who went on a hiding to avoid arrest, have reemerged again and were trafficking Heroin amounting crores of Taka to Godagari from across the border.  

Mofazzal Hossain Mofa, Councillor of ward-2 of Godagari Municipality informed, Shariful member of Diar Manik Chalk village is an infamous drug peddler. He constructed a palatial house at Mohishalbari. He has been continuing the drug peddling unabated from his frontier village. Like Shariful, Shahidul Islam Bhodol of Mohishalbari, Tofazzal, Ishaque Langra, Ahmmed, Tareque, Masum, Dhulu and Kalu of village Madarpur, Mahboob Kana and Fulal of Manik chalk, Arif and Piyarul of Taltola areas are all 'billionaire' drug peddlers. 

Iftekhayer Alam, spokesperson for district police, said that operation against drug peddlers would be intensified soon after the situation turns to normal.   Golam Ruhul Quddus, spokesperson of RMP, said that now efforts are continuing to resist coronavirus globally. As a result, the operation against drug peddlers and addicts has become a bit irregular.
