Published : 05 Mar 2022 09:00 PM

A bridge in Gainpara area on Sirajabad-Goalerchar road in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur has been lying idle for a long time. As a result, locals of six villages are constantly suffering in extreme commuting. Locals, including UP chairman Abdur Rahim Badshah, have demanded immediate repair of the bridge.

It can be seen on the ground that the bridge over the Gayenpara Kadamtali canal on the Mahalgiri road of Goallerchar union from Sirajabad market of Palbandha union of the upazila collapsed due to flood water four years ago. The suffering of the people has been exacerbated by the fact that the bridge has not been repaired or rebuilt in a long time.

Gulu Hossain, a local resident, said thousands of people use the road every day. Besides, he travels from Islampur Upazila Sadar to Merurchar Union of Bakshiganj Upazila and carries goods of various agricultural traders. But due to the dilapidated condition of the road bridge, they have to travel a lot at risk.

Goalerchar Union Awami League president Mosharraf Hossain said thousands of people from the union commute to the hat-bazaar every day through the bridge. As the bridge is useless, people are suffering a lot. In this regard, Goallerchar Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Rahim Badsha said, the bridge is very important. Although the bridge was built four years ago during the floods, it is still under construction.  I demand the authorities to speed up the construction of this important bridge.

Upazila engineer Aminul Haque said, "We have talked to the higher authorities about the bridge."  He said necessary action would be taken if instructed.
