The alternative bridge over Betraboti River in Kalaroa upazila of Sakhira district collapsed on Thursday due to intense water pressure from continues rainfall for several days. More than 5 lakh people of five unions of the upazila were disconnected from Kalaroa Sadar due to that. So the people of the areas are facing immense sufferings.
The bridge collapsed at around 11:00am on Thursday.
Locals said the bridge over the Betraboti River, that was the only means of communication with Kalaroa Sadar for people of Jalalabad union, Joynagar union, Deara union, Jogikhali union, Koila union and two wards of the municipality, became risky. So a new tender was issued to build a new bridge. After the tender, the risky bridge was demolished and construction work of a new bridge began. Meanwhile, an alternative bridge was built beside that for the communication of the people.
However, water level in the river increased due to the excessive rain caused by the recent low pressure and the alternative bridge collapsed due to the intense water pressure. People cannot go to the Upazila Health Complex, Kalaroa Upazila Parishad, Kalaroa Police Station, school, college, Kalaora Municipality Office and many other important institutions as communication was disrupted. They are facing serious difficulties due to that. Therefore, they demanded the immediate reconstruction of the bridge.
Kalaroa Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Johurul Islam confirmed the matter. He said I have talked to LGED officers as the engineers will do the work to construct the bridge. They are taking prompt action, the UNO said.
