Country’s biggest bridge is being built by Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) over Teesta River in Gaibandha, Kurigram districts, reports BSS.

Office sources said Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) is constructing the girder bridge at the cost of TK 800 crore while Saudi Fund for Development of KSA and government of Bangladesh is jointly proving the fund.

Earlier, the feasibility study to construct the bridge over the river was done by the experts’ team of Water and Flood Management Institute of BUET led by Professor Sajib Kumar Bala and Professor Dr. Tariqul Islam in 2010 and 2011, office sources said.

Executive engineer of LGED said the 1490-metre long bridge would be constructed over the Teesta River between Horipurghat of Sundarganj upazila under Gaibandha district and ChilmariKheyaghat point of Chilmari upazila under Kurigram district at the direct supervision of LGED.

Meanwhile, 68.34 hectares of land at Gaibandha point and 22.50 hectares of land at Kurigram point had already been acquired and connecting roads are being made at both sides of the bridge, sources added.

Besides this, 86 km long a spacious road from the bridge would also be connected to Rangpur-Bogra Highway at Dhaperhat area under Sadullapur upazila via Laxipur-Sadullapur upazila town to avoid severe traffic jam in Gaibandha district town, said an official.

Talking to the BSS, executive engineer of LGED AhsanKabir said the PC girder bridge would have 31 pillars and the piling work of the pillars has been progressing fast.

In reply to a query, the executive engineer said he was monitoring the work of the bridge closely so none could make complaint against the works of the gigantic bridge. The work would be finished in JUNE, 2023, he expected.
