Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Thursday said in Beijing that regional and international connectivity under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) will play a vital role as the ‘growth engine’ for achieving Bangladesh’s development goals, reports BSS. “BRI will play a special role for implementing the targets, declared by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to turn the country into a middle income one by 2021 and developed and prosperous one by 2041,” he said.

The minister was speaking at a session titled ‘Enhancing Policy Synergy under the Principle of Extensive Consultation, Joint Efforts and Shared Benefits’ of the ‘Second Belt and Road Forum’ at the Multifunctional Hall of the National Convention Centre in Beijing, China, said a press release. Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Li Yang moderated the session while ministers from different countries took part at the discussion.

Humayun said BRI is a joint effort to develop the free economy worldwide and protect the multilateral trade interests. “Bangladesh is working to strengthen economic, cultural and trade connectivity with the Asia region and other countries. Bangladesh is giving priority to the development policy to integrate with the global development through infrastructural development and rapid industrialization,” he added.

He said that the national industrial policy of the country has been emphasized by creating sustainable and inclusive growth through employment generation, creating new entrepreneurs and establishing linkage with international markets.
