BPC increases allocation by 20pc for octane, 10pc for diesel and petrol

Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has increased fuel allocation by 20 percent for octane and 10 percent for diesel and petrol to manage market pressure.

The decision has been taken to ensure a stable supply of fuel at both dealer and consumer levels in line with current demand.

According to a directive issued by BPC on Sunday, the increased allocation aims to maintain an uninterrupted fuel supply amid rising demand.

BPC has instructed its subsidiary companies to take necessary measures to sell fuel at the enhanced rates starting on Monday.

As per the order, the daily allocation has been set at 13,048 metric tons for diesel, 1,422 metric tons for octane, and 1,547 metric tons for petrol. Company-wise shares have also been specified.

The decision comes at a time when the government has recently increased fuel prices significantly at the retail level. On Saturday night, prices of four types of fuel were raised by more than 10 percent. The new prices, effective from Sunday are Tk 115 per liter for diesel, Tk 140 for octane, Tk 135 for petrol, and Tk 130 for kerosene.

This adjustment led to an increase of Tk 15 for diesel, Tk 20 for octane, Tk 19 for petrol, and Tk 18 for kerosene.

Earlier in early March, BPC imposed limits on daily fuel sales to control distribution. Under the restrictions, motorcycles were allowed 2 liters of octane or petrol, private cars 10 liters, SUVs and microbuses 20 to 25 liters, and diesel-run vehicles between 70 and 220 liters. Later, the limit for ride-sharing motorcycles was increased to 5 liters.

Relevant stakeholders believe that this increased allocation will play an important role in stabilizing the market supply and easing pressure following the recent price hike.
