While addressing the first weekly cabinet meeting after the formation of the new government for the fourth consecutive term, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated her strong stance against corruption in the government purchase.

She also ordered the ministers, state ministers, and government high-ups to take stern action against any corruption or injustice. Take steps against them (corrupt officials), no matter whoever they are, to ensure accountability and transparency in every sector at any cost, Sheikh Hasina said in a strongly-worded voice.

The Awami League formed the government for the fourth consecutive term as a new 37-member council of ministers was sworn in on Thursday.

We applaud Sheikh Hasina’s bold statement against corruption. Apart from the ministers, state ministers and bureaucrats, we think the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will also work with zero tolerance to make the country corruption-free to fulfil the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

We think the ministers, state ministers, bureaucrats, and field-level government officials must follow the prime minister’s order. And they will raise an unequivocal and collective voice against corruption being imbued with the spirit of the War of Liberation to build a corruption-free prosperous Bangladesh.

In this regard, officials and employees of the ACC must show utmost neutrality and morality at all levels to ensure that the image of the entire anti-graft watchdog is not tarnished for controversial activities of a section of dishonest officials. Besides, the ACC officials concerned will have to win people’s confidence through their positive activities.

prosperous Bangladesh

The people who will be found abusing state power and neglecting their responsibilities should be brought to justice under the existing law. The seed of corruption was sown by the past governments that came to power illegally after the August 1975 carnage and since then corruption continued to engulf almost all the sectors of the country.

Corruption is still one of the major concerns in our country despite the government’s zero-tolerance policy on the social ill. There was a time when it was a normal phenomenon to suppress any sort of corruption.

However, it has been noticed that corruption has started coming down significantly as a result of people’s negative attitude towards the corrupt officials and above all the government’s bold steps to root out corruption from the society and build a developed Bangladesh by 2041.

Though Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken zero-tolerance policy on corruption, many officials and employees are still indulging in corruption, irregularities and other illegal activities at different government offices and organisations. We think if the common people start hating the corrupt and boycotting them socially and continue protesting against them, no one will dare get involved in such misdoings in future.  And the corrupt people will be ousted in phases from the society.

In this regard, when any news or information comes out about any corruption or unjust activities, the ACC and other organisations must go for immediate action. Besides, common people will also have to play bold role in preventing corruption by stopping misuse of power and public money by a small section of government servants and others.

Simultaneously, the authorities have to evaluate the honest, sincere and dedicated people socially as their recognition for good job would help reduce corruption in the society. Therefore, we think whatever party a corrupt person belongs to, he/she must be brought to justice.
