Boro harvesting in haor likely to set new record

Paddy harvesting in Haor has started earlier this year to avoid the undesirable situation of last year. Till now, 80 percent of the paddy harvesting of Howar in Sunamganj has been completed. If the conditions are favourable, harvesting of paddy may be completed within the next week.

The agriculture department has already said that 80 percent of paddy harvesting has been completed in Sunamganj's Howrah. Out of this, 55 percent of paddy has been harvested in Sylhet, 75 paddy in Moulvibazar, 70 paddy in Habiganj, 75 paddy in Sunamganj, 65 paddy in Kishoreganj, 80 paddy in Netrokona and 70 paddy in Brahmanbaria.

Farmers are desperately harvesting paddy to avoid the risk of early floods and natural disasters. After two consecutive years of loss, farmers are picking the crops in the hope of a bumper yield.

The agriculture department informed that they are advising the farmers to harvest ripe paddy on an urgent basis.

Farmers have been facing losses in the Boro fields for the past two years due to early floods and coronavirus infection, but the agriculture department expects to produce more rice than the target this year if there is no major natural calamity. To avoid all the risks, the farmers harvesting paddy in an urgent basis.

The Directorate of Agricultural Extension said that in the current season, 222,795 hectares of land has been cultivated in 137 haor of Sunamganj. From this, the target of rice production has been set at 13,53,000 tonnes. A total of 713 combined harvesters have been distributed in the district.

According to the calculations of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Boro has been cultivated in total 50 lakh hectares of land in the country this year. The target of rice production has been fixed at 2.15 crore tonnes. Besides, Boro paddy was cultivated in 4814000 hectares of land in the fiscal year 2021-22. And rice production was about 2.02 crore tonnes.

It is to be noted that last year, the hill slope that came down from the upstream broke the dam of Howar and 45000 tonnes of paddy in different Howars of Sunamganj were submerged. Farmers incurred a loss worth Tk 200 crore.
