Boro rice production has set a new record this year with a total harvesting of 2,7,84,508 tons, which is the highest ever in the country’s history.

Besides, the yield has also increased as compared to the previous years. Last year, the national average yield of boro paddy was 3.97 tons per hectare which stood at 4.29 tons this year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the production of boro this year has been more than 11 lakh tons compared to last year. Boro rice production last year was 1.96 crore tons. This time the target was to produce 2.5 crore tons of rice in Boro.

Agriculture Minister Md Abdur Razzque has said, “Under the direction of the Prime Minister, we had adopted a comprehensive plan earlier this year. Farmers have received incentives including seeds and fertilizers. As a result of our initiative, boro paddy has been planted in more than 1,20,000 hectares of land this year.”

“Besides hybrid category of rice cultivation has increased in more than 3 lakh hectares of land as compared to last year. As a result, the boro rice has produced more than last year,” added the minister.

According to the concerned, now more than 55 percent of the total rice produced annually comes from the boro. However, it is very challenging to harvest due to the sudden floods and heavy rains, the farmers have to worry every year about taking the Haor paddy home properly.

Mosammat Nazmanara Khanum, Secretary of Ministry of Food told Bangladesh Post, “As per the Agriculture Ministry estimated target, Boro production this year hit record high. It’s really good news for us. We hope this will help us to continue all the government relief work and maintain rice market more stable.”

Asadullah, Director General of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) told Bangladesh Post, “This time the yield of Boro paddy has boosted due to the increased in use of high breed seeds. New varieties have also expanded. The production of hybrid paddy has increased by three lakh hectares this time. Even in Covid-19, we have helped the farmers in many ways.”

Meanwhile, the use of technology has reduced the labor crisis this year. Under the Tk 3,020 crore agricultural mechanization project, 50 to 60 per cent subsidy has been given to the farmers in the region.

According to the data, 1,240 combine harvesters were brought to the field to harvest paddy last year. This year, a total of 2,906 combine harvesters, including 1,666 have harvested paddy in the field. A total of 839 rippers are also running, which is almost double last year.

Boro paddy has been planted in 4683760 hectares of land across the country this year. Last year, boro paddy was planted in 4754447 hectares.
