Boro cultivation exceeds target in Chuadanga

The cultivation target of Boro has exceeded in Chuadanga district this season due to low production costs.

It is learnt, farmers are very busy taking care of their Boro paddy fields. They are weeding out grasses, irrigating fields and putting fertilizers according to the advice of agriculture officials.  According to Agriculture Extension Department (DAE), the target of Boro paddy cultivation was fixed at 34,800 hectares of land where the farmers have cultivated boro on 35,720 hectares of land this season. 

Of the total, Upazila-wise breaks-up are-6,830 hectares of land in sadar upazila, 12,590 hectares in Alamdanga upazila, 9,050 hectares in Damurhuda upazila and 7,250 hectares of land in Jibannagar upazila. 

The department fixed product target at 2,28,250.8 tonnes of paddy from the land. The Upazila-wise production may be 43,643.7 tonnes in sadar upazila, 80,450.1 tonnes in Alamdanga upazila, 57,829.5 tonnes in Damurhuda upazila and 46,327.5 tonnes in Jibannagar upazila.

Some farmers said, Boro saplings were planted from the last week of November 2023 to the end of February 2024. They also said, Boro variety is sown in winter and harvested in summer, so it is known as spring paddy.

Abdullah, a farmer of village Nehalpur in sadar upazila of Chuadanga district said, “Boro paddy is being cultivated in the areas, the Boro variety is known as ‘khato babu’ and ‘Baro mini’.

 Shihab Uddin Mollah of village Boalia in sadar upazila of the district said, he has cultivated Boro paddy on 1.5 bighas of land.

Mokul Hossain of village Joyrampur in Damurhuda upazila of the district said, he has taken 3 bighas of land under Boro cultivation in this season. Anisur Rahman, a farmer of village Monohorpur in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district said, he has cultivated Boro paddy on 1bigha of land.

Mostafizur Rahaman, sub-assistant agriculture officer of sadar upazila told this correspondent that farmers have been successful. So, farmers are eager to cultivate it in their lands. Besides, production cost is low.

Bevash Chandra Saha, Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department said, every farmer of the area is cultivating Boro paddy for meeting up their own demand as food item for the whole year.
