Body-worn cameras to ensure overall security in Cox’s Bazar

Cox's Bazar is the tourist hub of Bangladesh, where domestic and foreign tourists have been constantly flocking.

Police personnel in Cox's Bazar started using 'body-worn' cameras to ensure the overall safety of these tourists and others in Cox's Bazar. 

At the initial stage, the use of this camera was started by the district traffic department. This camera was given to the members of the traffic department in the first stage. Body or camera will be provided in 20 traffic points of the district in phases. With this, Cox's Bazar city has taken another step forward in technical activities, said Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police Md. Hasanuzzaman PPM. This afternoon, in the first phase, at the Kalatali Dolphin intersection in Cox's Bazar, the members of the traffic police on duty were inaugurated by installing 'Body Own' cameras on their bodies. Also present were Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Superinten­dent of Traffic Police Rakib Ur Raj, Traffic Inspector (TI Administration) Amjad Hossain, TI Shawkat Hossain, TI Nirmal Dev Nath, TI Tuhin Ahmed, TI Mosharraf Hossain Khan, Sergeant Ferdous and other members of Traffic Department.

Superintendent of Police. Hasanuzzaman PPM said the activities of the police personnel on duty in the field would be monitored through these cameras. This initiative is only to bring transparency and accountability in the work of the police. Through this the movement of traffic police and citizens will be monitored. This will benefit both parties.

Earlier, the traffic department of Dhaka, Sylhet, Chittagong Metropolitan Police started its activities with this camera. In addition to the traffic in the tourist city, those responsible for crime control and law and order have been given ‘body ear’ cameras, said SP Md. Hasanuzzaman. The Superintendent of Police said, "We will monitor where a police officer is at the moment, what his duties are, from the central control room through body or camera. Not only surveillance but also the activities of the police will be on record. This will ensure transparency as well as accountability in their work.'

Will the movement of citizens be monitored through body or camera? When asked, the SP said, "It is for the police's own work. This includes the control activities of service providers and service recipients. When a policeman is talking to someone on the street or in a house or in an area, in an organization, what is being said will be recorded on camera for 12 hours. Our sole purpose is to bring transparency and accountability in the work of the police. He also said that in many developed, civilized countries of the world there are activities of body wear camera.
