After recovering arms and mortar shells fired from Myanmar side for the last few days, police recovered the body of an unidentified man with helmet and gloves along Bangladesh border with Myanmar in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.
Shamim Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station, said that local people spotted the body of the man floating in the tidal water in Balukhali canal connected to the Naf River.
“On information, we went to the spot and recovered the body. The identity of the deceased could not be kown,” he added.
According to the police, the body has a helmet on its head and gloves in its hands. The body was bloated. The police suspect that he might have been killed a few days ago.
Kaisar, a local youth, said that there were black marks of injuries on the face of the man and he might have been washed ashore at Balukhali from Myanmar’s Dekhibunia through the Naf River.
Meanwhile, local people found two more dead bodies near the zero point at the upper side of the Balukhali canal. The two bodies are lying in a garbage between the bushes of two canals. The bodies were seen in a viral video.
The locals believe that the victims were the members of a Myanmar rebel group. However, the police could not say anything in this regard.
Earlier on Saturday, police recovered a bullet-ridden body of a man from Rahmaterbil area of Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya. The body had been lying in the border area for last two days. An army bomb disposal team defused two unexploded mortar shells recovered by the BGB members at Naikhongchhari Tumbru border in Bandarban on Sunday.
Two mortar shells were defused at the Tumbru road at around 4:00pm on Sunday.
According to local and BGB sources, two unexploded mortar shells were recovered on the land adjacent to 39 pillar on Tumbru border and on the bridge adjacent to Tumbru BOP two days ago. Tumbru BOP kept it in a safe place at the side of the road.
Anwarul Islam, UP member of Ward No 5 of Ghumdhum Union, said that two mortar shells recovered on Saturday and Friday were detonated by the army bomb squad. He said that the situation along the border is now normal.
AKM Jahangir Aziz, Chairman of Ghumdhum Union Parishad, said that after the deterioration of the situation along the border, some relief has returned to the people on Sunday.
But he said that the fear has not completely subsided among the people living in the border area.
A tense situation has been prevailing along the border between Bandarban’s Naikhongchhari Ghumdhum and Tumbru amid skirmishes and gunfire between the armed forces of the military junta and insurgent groups inside Myanmar for the last two weeks.
Over 300 Myanmar forces and border guards have so far taken shelter in Bangladesh as of Wednesday noon in the wake of conflicts along the border.
Meanwhile, two people — a Bangladeshi woman and a Rohingya man — were killed when mortar shells from the Myanmar side landed on a kitchen at village Jalpaitli of Ghumdhum union in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban on February 5.
