Body to probe incidents of death in drains, canals

The cabinet has directed to investigate the disappearances and deaths in the city's drains and swearage.

A letter sent by Chattogram Divisional Commissioner expressed regret over the incident and asked the Cabinet Division to investigate who was responsible for the incident and submit a report.

 Following the letter, a seven-member inquiry committee headed by Chattogram Additional Divisional Commissioner (Development) Mizanur Rahman has been formed.

The committee includes CMP Police Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner's Representative, CDA Secretary and Chief Engineer of Water Development Board, Chief Engineer of Chittagong City Corporation, Director of Canal Re-excavation Extension and Development Project.

Sheherin Mahmud Sadia, 19, a student of the International Islamic University, died on September 27 after slipping on the sidewalk in the Agrabad Mazar Gate area of the city.  Vegetable seller Saleh Ahmed slipped and drowned in a drain in Muradpur area on August 25.

 After much searching, he was not found.  The driver and a passenger were died when an autorickshaw fell into Chashma canal in the Mayor's Goliarea on June 30. After these incidents, the authorities set up a temporary security cordon at the scene by pulling ropes or using bamboo.
