The government has formed a search committee to recommend names for the appointment of vice-chancellors, pro-vice-chancellors, and treasurers at all public universities, including general, agricultural, science and technology, and engineering institutions.
The Ministry of Education's Secondary and Higher Education Division on Sunday issued a notification announcing the committee's formation.
Signed by Senior Assistant Secretary ASM Kasem, the notification said the panel would review applications and submit three names for each post. Then, the president and chancellor will ultimately recommend one for the appointment in line with relevant university laws.
The five-member committee is headed by Education Adviser CR Abrar and the others include University Grants Commission (UGC) members Prof Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan and Prof Md Saidur Rahman, Rajshahi University Vice-Chancellor Prof Saleh Hasan Naqib, and BRAC University Prof Firdous Azim.
The committee may also co-opt additional members for specific university categories, such as agricultural, science and technology, and engineering institutions.
The University Wing of the Secondary and Higher Education Division will serve as its secretariat.
As per the directive, the committee will gather résumés of eligible candidates, assess them, and submit a shortlist of three names per position for each position. It will then recommend one candidate to the government for final approval by the President and Chancellor.
The same procedure will apply for the posts of pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer.
The notification said the government would consider the committee's recommendations final. The order takes immediate effect.
