A body-carrying freezer van has been launched in Rangunia at the personal initiative of Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud.
The freezer van was introduced at a doa and milad mahfil on the Rangunia Upazila Health Complex premises on Thursday, a ministry press release said on Friday. The van is being operated by NNK Foundation, the family charity organisation of Dr Hasan, for the welfare of the people of his constituency Rangunia and its surrounding upazilas.
The people of Rangunia had long been facing trouble in carrying bodies for lack of freezer van. This is the first freezer van that the Rangunia’s people got. It is expected that this van will cut the long-standing grief of local people. In addition to this, a modern ambulance has been operating in Rangunia for five years at the personal initiative of the information minister.
Dr Hasan said many people of Rangunia and its surrounding upazilas have been living abroad for their livelihoods and these remittance fighters often die in accidents there. Upon arrival of their bodies in airports, the families of the victims have to suffer a lot for lack of freezer van, he said.
The information minister said even if anyone dies in a hospital in Chattogram city, the family of the decease often has to face problem in taking his or her body to Rangunia. With such humanitarian assistance, he said, the freezer van will provide services in Rangunia and its surrounding upazilas.
Hasan said a few years ago, an ambulance was provided to the people of Rangunia by the NNK Foundation, while the government provided an ambulance to them three years ago. Critical patients of Rangunia are getting services through these two ambulances, he said, hoping that the introduction of this freezer van will help locals carry and preserve bodies.
Rangunia Upazila Parishad chairman Swajan Kumar Talukder, municipality mayor Md Shahjahan Sikder, upazila health and family planning officer Dr Dev Prasad Chakraborty, Union Parisad chairman Idris Azgar, Rangunia Upazila Awami League general secretary Engineer Shamsul Alam Talukder, AL leader Akhter Hossain Khan and municipality councilor Jasim Uddin Shah were, among others, present at the doa mahfil.
