Leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have vowed to continue its ongoing movement until fulfilling the desire of the people.
“The ongoing movement, aiming at building a democratic state and society, will continue until fulfilling the desire of the people,” BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters at a briefing at BNP Chairperson’s political office at Gulshan on Sunday.
The briefing was organised to brief the media about the decisions made during a virtual meeting of the BNP standing committee held on May 8.
The BNP, which boycotted the last general elections, came out again on the field and held its first rally in front of its Nayapaltan central office after six months.
Mirza Fakhrul alleged that in the name of so-called development activities, ethics and values were undermined in running the state affairs.
When his attention was drawn over the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu and remarks of Awami League general secretary, the BNP leader said they are not bothered about anyone’s visit to Bangladesh.
AL general secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday said that Donald Lu is coming to Bangladesh to enhance the relations with the incumbent government.
“The Bangladesh Nationalist Party does not have any interest on anyone’s visit. Our source of inspiration is the
people of Bangladesh. We have the confidence in the people and we stand on it,” he said.
Over the Bangladesh Bank’ imposition of a strict restriction on journalists’ access to its headquarters, Mirza Fakhrul said such restriction was imposed to save the interest of loan defaulters and dishonest businessmen.
“As the incumbent government does not have any accountability at any level, a vested interest group is being made through continuous bank looting, siphoning of money and plundering public money. This quarter is providing financial support to the illegal activities of the ‘illegal’ government,” he said, urging the authorities concerned to withdraw the restriction immediately to ensure free flow of information.
Fakhrul alleged that the government was making Bangladesh financially dependent on others allowing a particular quarter to plunder public money and avail of different financial benefits illegally through corruption and irregularities.
“It has already been proven that Bangladesh has become a failed state…when a country’s economic backbone is broken and its political and social structures are ruined for a lack of accountability, then it turns into a failed state. Anarchy has now been prevailing throughout the country,” he observed.
