State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that the government after 1975 has pushed the country backwards by almost 50 years. They worked for their own gain instead of working for the betterment of the people. BNP and Tarique Rahman turned the country into a beggar state.

The state minister was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion during the inauguration of Punarbhaba river excavation work at Dinajpur'sBirganjupazila'sBattalisthaMuktijuddhaSmritistambha ground on Saturday.

The excavation work will be completed in the next two years under the supervision of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA). Under the project, about 78 km of waterway will be dug from Sundara to Singhajani with an average width of 30 meters. About 15 million cubic meters of excavation is available. It will cost about 140 crore.

The seven contracted companies and BIWTA will carry out the excavation work. Excavation of the Punarbhaba River will result in it being upgraded to a third class navigational route. Cargo vessels can be seen in the river again. Due to the availability of water in the river during the dry season, agricultural activities will increase, fish farming will be facilitated and there will be a positive impact on the environment.

Describing the present government as a road model for development, the state minister said that country is moving forward.

“No one will be able to stop its continuation going forward. The government after '75 used to import food from abroad and the present government was taking effective measures to meet the demand for food and export it,” he said.
