State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam has said the BNP will seek votes by highlighting tangible development in electricity, gas, roads, education, sports and other sectors rather than making promises of heavenly rewards. He made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a cheque distribution programme organised by Chattogram Zila Parishad at Baharchhara Union Parishad premises in Banshkhali upazila on Thursday afternoon. The programme provided financial assistance to rehabilitate floodaffected people. Mir Shahe Alam said the BNP government was still at an early stage of its tenure and had undertaken short-, medium- and long-term plans in various sectors. After five years, the government would return to the people and give an account of its work, he said. He said sudden heavy rainfall and flooding had caused extensive damage in Banshkhali, Chandanaish and Satkania and that the government was making maximum efforts to rehabilitate the victims. “Prime Minister Tarique Rahman instructed me to come to Banshkhali. I was directed to stand beside the flood victims and take necessary measures on behalf of the prime minister,” he said. According to reports presented at the event, around 12,000 houses in Banshkhali were damaged or destroyed during the flooding in July. The Chattogram District Council distributed financial assistance among 510 affected families on Thursday. Another 590 families in different parts of Chattogram will receive assistance in phases, Administrator Mahbuber Rahman Shamim said. Anwara-BanshkhaliChakaria road to be widened Mir Shahe Alam said the tender process had been completed to widen the Anwara-Banshkhali-Chakaria road to 34 feet. He asked local representatives to provide lists of other roads requiring repair or reconstruction for necessary action by the ministry. He also urged BNP activists to remain patient, saying the party had returned to power after a long period. “Within the framework of law and regulations, opportunities for jobs, legitimate dealerships and work will be considered for those who have worked for the party for a long time,” he said.#SAS
