Information Minister and Joint General Secretary of Awami League Dr Hasan Mahmud said, “I am in awe of Mirza Fakhrul's attempt to make Begum Khaleda Zia a woman freedom fighter and to call the Razakars who fought for Pakistan as freedom fighters. I don't what the definition of a freedom fighter is for him.”
He was responding to a question from reporters after the inauguration of the newly formed ‘South Rangunia' police station with four unions in Rangunia upazila of Chittagong on Saturday. Additional DIG of Chittagong Range Zakir Hossain, District Superintendent of Police SM Rashidul Haque and other senior police officials were present on the occasion.
Asked by reporters if the BNP secretary general has demanded Begum Khaleda Zia as a woman freedom fighter. Hasan said, “I would like to say with due respect to Begum Zia, she was in the hospitality of Pakistanis in the cantonment of Pakistanis for nine months of the liberation war. Now all of a sudden Mirza Fakhrul Saheb discovered that Khaleda Zia to be a woman freedom fighter.”
Regarding the establishment of South Rangunia Thana, the Information and Broadcasting Minister said that the Prime Minister had decided to set up a Thana here about two years ago. After passing other administrative steps, the activities of the police station are officially starting today. More than 160,000 people live in southern Rangunia, which is separated from the rest of Rangunia by the Karnafuli River.
Coming from Rangunia police station, there were many obstacles in providing services here. The criminals used to flee to the hilly areas here. That is why it was very necessary to set up a police station here, the demand of the locals was also met, he added.
The newly formed South Rangunia Police Station has appointed one Officer-in-Charge, three Sub-Inspectors-SI, four ASIs and 18 Constables.
