Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has said with a note of sarcasm that BNP’s celebrating Independence Day with the ones who were against the independence is nothing but a joke.

He made the remark in a video conference from his residence at an introductory meeting of the relief and social welfare sub-committee at the party's central office on Wednesday.

Obaidul Quader said that BNP has repeatedly tarnished the spirit of independence and trampled human rights under the guise of democracy.

He said, "The BNP has become isolated from the people and it’s activists due to its non-political behaviour. They don't have votes. So the grassroots people are moving away from the election knowing there defeat is certain. “

Responding to the allegation that bus services were stopped because of the BNP rally, the Awami League general secretary said, "Due to the BNP rally, the bus owners stopped running vehicles in fear of burning. The government has no hand in this connection. People watched BNP beating the police. This is their politics; they could not get out of their negative politics.”

Addressing the leaders and workers of his party, he said, "After many people have signed up for the sub-committee, there is no more research. Some of them got involved in various misdeeds by printing their cards as members of the sub-committee. Strict action will be taken against them. If a person writes his name in different committees, their names will be removed from all the committees.”

Obaidul Quader advised everyone to work with honesty and imbibing with Bangabandhu's ideology.

Awami League presidium member Matia Chowdhury, along with newly elected leaders of the Relief and Social Welfare Sub-Committee including Agriculture Secretary Faridunnahar Laily, Health Secretary Dr. Rokeya Sultan, Education and Human Resources Affairs Secretary Shamsun Nahar Chapa were present at the introductory meeting conducted by Awami League relief and social welfare secretary and organizing committee member secretary Sujit Roy Nandi.
