Activists of BNP aided by Jamaat-e-Islami on Tuesday created anarchy countrywide and were locked into fierce clashes with law-enforces in the capital Dhaka and at different parts of the country like Bogura, Khagrachhari, Kishorganj, Laxmipur and Pirojpur.
During the road march programme, the BNP activists also set fire to vehicles and went into rampage creating severe panic among the commuters.
The road march programme also caused severe traffic jam much to sufferings of people.
In capital Dhaka, the BNP men were locked into clashes with Bangladesh Chhatra League, the students’ wing of Awami League, near Mirpur Govt Bangla college at around 11:30am. During the clashes, brickbats were thrown targeting each other. A motorcycle and a bicycle were also burnt during the clash.
In Khagrachari, more than a hundred of people were injured as activists of Awami League and BNP locked into clashes at Shapla Chattar area around 10:30. The clash erupted when local BNP leaders and activists took out a procession as part of the party’s central program.
AL’s local unit had also planned a procession around the same time.
The two groups were locked in clashes and chased each other for over three hours in the Shapla Chattar and nearby areas, locals said.
Clashes erupted in Khagrachhari town--from Bhanga Bridge to Shapla Chattar. Iron rods and bamboo sticks were used by BNP activists.
In the clashes, the municipality office was vandalised and at least eight motorcycles were torched.
More than 100 people, including district Awami League Deputy Secretary Nurul Azam, Md Almas, Kyajri Marma and district BNP’s coordinator secretary Md Hossain Babu were injured.
Police fired rubber bullets and used tear gas to bring the situation under control. Additional police have been deployed in the area.
Local AL and BNP leaders have blamed each other for initiating the clash.
In Bogura, at least 50 people were injured when activists of BNP were locked into clashes with police.
As part of the BNP’s scheduled march programme, BNP men brought out processions at Nababbari Road party office around 11 am and locked into clashes with police.
The clash left around 50 people, including six policemen injured.
In Kishoreganj, several people, including journalists, sustained injuries in a clash between police and BNP activists.
The clash ensued when BNP activists started pelting brickbats at police. Police also charged baton and fired several rounds of tear shells.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) Mushtaq Sarkar said BNP activists resorted to violence by throwing bricks at the law-enforcers.
In Pirojpur, leaders and activists of BNP clashed with police during the party’s march in Pirojpur town.
Pirojpur Sadar Police Station OC Abeer Mohammad Hasan said seven policemen were injured during the clash. They have been admitted to Pirojpur district hospital.
He said BNP leaders and activists attacked police with sticks and threw bricks at them during the party’s march on Circuit House road in the city. Police later brought the situation under control.
Incidents of violence were also reported from Feni and different other districts.
